Via Daring Fireball kommer efterlängtade nyheter för hårdvaruaccelererad H.264 video för tredjepartsprogram. Apple har tidigare hållit hardvaruacceleration för H.264 stängt för andra än dom själva.
- The Video Decode Acceleration framework is a C programming interface providing low-level access to the H.264 decoding capabilities of compatible GPUs such as the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M or GeForce GT 330M. It is intended for use by advanced developers who specifically need hardware accelerated decode of video frames.
Detta möjliggör äntligen att det kommer vara möjligt för Flash att spela upp video utan att behöva belasta datorns processor lika mycket. Flash Player 10.1 använder just hårdvaruacceleration på Windows för att öka prestandan och om nu Apple också tillåter detta kommer Flash på Mac bli mera jämbördigt med Flash på PC.

Nu går rykten att Apple är i samtal med ARM Holdings om ett uppköp. Apple har redan köpt på sig två företag som sysslar med mobila processorer så varför inte ta det största också.
Apple is reportedly interested in acquiring ARM Holdings, the Cambridge England firm that licenses the majority of the world’s mobile chip designs.

Filhanteringen på iPad är ju som bekant inte vad den borde vara. Med appen Folder får du en mapp där du kan lägga alla dina filer för att sedan öppna dem i det program du vill. Inte en perfekt lösning men det underlättar.
Du kan dessuom lägga över filer från vilken dator som helst med iTunes på, inte bara den dator du synkar med.
- The concept is simple: instead of having to deal with dozens of different applications that supports dozens of different file types, you just throw everything into an app and then – on the iPad – you decide where each file has to go. You don’t have to deal with iTunes anymore, you just copy all the files into Folder and then you move the files around. You can also forward email attachments to Folder.
Folder kostar 15 kr i App Store.
Ja det var väl inte så mycket annat att göra än att kasta in handduken. Apple vill helt enkelt inte se applikationer utvecklade i Flash på iPhone OS-plattformen.
Mike Chambers skriver bland annat detta i ett blogginlägg:
- Essentially, this has the effect of restricting applications built with a number of technologies, including Unity, Titanium, MonoTouch, and Flash CS5. While it appears that Apple may selectively enforce the terms, it is our belief that Apple will enforce those terms as they apply to content created with Flash CS5. Developers should be prepared for Apple to remove existing content and applications (100+ on the store today) created with Flash CS5 from the iTunes store.
We will still be shipping the ability to target the iPhone and iPad in Flash CS5. However, we are not currently planning any additional investments in that feature.
Apple presenterade igår kväll sin kvartalsrapport för andra kvartalet. De kör med lite egen kalender där borta i Cupertino. Man kan konstatera att Apple fortsätter gå bättre och bättre.

- Apple sold 2.94 million Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing a 33 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 8.75 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 131 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 10.89 million iPods during the quarter, representing a one percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.
“We’re thrilled to report our best non-holiday quarter ever, with revenues up 49 percent and profits up 90 percent,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve launched our revolutionary new iPad and users are loving it, and we have several more extraordinary products in the pipeline for this year.”
“Looking ahead to the third fiscal quarter of 2010, we expect revenue in the range of about $13.0 billion to $13.4 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share in the range of about $2.28 to $2.39,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO.
Med en dockstation får man ett betydligt renare skrivbord och denna docka är så snygg och smidig att den duger t.o.m. att ha på TV-bänken. Ett smidigt alternativ om man inte har ett mediacenter som alltid är anslutet till ens TV.

Ars Technica har tagit sig en närmare titt på iWork till iPad och själva programmen får helt ok omdömen men vad det faller på är exportfunktionerna och hela hanteringen av fildelningen. Att man inte heller kan skriva ut direkt från en iPad gör ett officepaket som iWork mer svårt att motivera.
Därmed inte sagt att man med tangentbordsdockan eller ett bluetooth-tangentbord kan få en hel del gjort men att behöva sträcka sig upp på skärmen för formatering av texten känns lite omständigt. Men visst är iWork bättre än inget officepaket alls när man behöver göra ändringar på språng.

So while iWork is usable on Apple’s new ”magical” device, it probably won’t cut it for serious users. If you need to make an on-the-fly change to a document or presentation, you might lose some formatting or suffer some other unexpected quirks. What Apple calls file sharing, I call a pain, and the inability to print just magnifies things.
iWork for the iPad won’t replace most people’s desktop office suite. It may be OK for your grandmother, but without a way to print, even that is doubtful. But if you need to make a quick change or two in a cab, in coach, or in a cramped telephone booth, iWork is definitely serviceable.

Nu har Apple skickat en formell begäran till Gizmodo att de vill ha tillbaka sin iPhone-prototyp som Gizmodo visat upp för världen. Ja om det fanns någon som helst tvekan förut så är det nu bevisat att den är äkta.
This phone was lost, and then found. But from Apple’s perspective, it could have been considered stolen. I told them, all they have to do to get it back is to claim it—on record. This formal request from Apple’s legal department is that claim. It proves—if there was any doubt in your mind—that this thing is real.

En annan intressant iaktagelse av 9 to 5 Mac är att under den fika som Steve Jobs och Eric Schmidt hade för någon vecka sedan hördes Steve Jobs säga: [Enthusiastically] ”They’re going to see it all eventually so who cares how they get it.”. Kan det ha varit den försvunna iPhone’n han pratade om då?
Att se på film på en iPhone var inget man gjorde mer än i nödfall men med en iPad förändras allt.
Federico Viticci är av samma åsikt som mig och har hunnit med att testa Air Video. Själv har jag bara hunnit med att testa några avsnitt några avsnitt av tv-serien V inspelade på mitt mediacenter med EyeTV Sat. Exporterar man för Apple TV blir det riktigt bra kvalite och funkar alldeles utmärkt att avnjuta tv på. Men jag återkommer senare med mina tankar om hur bra iPad fungerar som komplement till ett mediacenter med EyeTV.
- I heard many times that Air Video for iPhone was a very well realized application, but I’ve been that kind of guy that puts movies on his iPod or iPhone to watch them on the go. Watching a movie is a religious experience that should happen in the total darkness and silence of my room. I even lock the door, so that nobody can come in and ask me what move it is. It’s just me and the actors. Problem is not the “where”, but the “how”. Like I said, I used to watch movies on my Macbook, but after trying this iPad version of Air Video I have to re-think the whole system.
